The scarf of Cambodia:
This scarf is handmade in Cambodia & called a ' Krama'. It's a unique national clothing item & a simple expression of every conceivable colour with a multitude of applications. The local population (and visitors alike) wear it as a sarong, a sun guard use it as a towel, a baby carrier & of course as a scarf. Due to hot arid winds in the summer months it is especially suited as a head guard protecting the airways against dust. In times of war the blood-red Krama was worn as a sign of loyalty by the notorious Khmer Rouge who also used them as bandages in the field.
The war between Vietnam & Cambodia has for generations had immense human repercussions which to this day still causes an excess of human sacrifice & destitution. The plain truth of it can be witnessed by the thousands of landmines that were never removed & hapless families mourning the loss of a loved one or tending the ones crippled by mines while often living below the poverty line themselves.
All Kramas are hand-woven by workers at Khmer Life; a non-profit humanitarian organisation whose purpose is to help the victims of landmines along with the ones who cannot help themselves. Khmer Life use their profits to improve on the facilities while implementing new projects benefiting the poor of Cambodia. We figure that's a worthy cause & a sound investment for anyone - which is why we donate 25,- DKK on your behalf to support this venture every time you buy a Krama, regular or silk! Please note that this scarf is manufactured entirely by hand without any artificial dyes so we hope that you will appreciate any minor irregularities that may occur.
